On Thursday, Delta's comprehensive work to #GetOnBoard against human trafficking was recognized as the top global corporate campaign fighting slavery by Thomson Reuters Foundation’s 2020 Stop Slavery Awards in London.
Delta has led the fight against human trafficking for almost 10 years now, as the first airline to sign ECPAT’s Code of Conduct in 2011. With nominees across the globe and leading abolitionists from Europe, Asia, Australia and the United States in attendance, the awards made clear Delta sets a global standard beyond the travel industry as a leading business defending human rights.
“Our experience has been that once you raise awareness and people understand what is really happening in the human trafficking space, they are shocked, they are angered, and then they are motivated to act,” said Meg Taylor, Vice President - Chief Litigation & Employment Counsel and member of Delta's Executive Steering Committee Against Human Trafficking. “For all of our employees who are so passionate and proud of the work that we are doing: thank you. There is still so much work to be done.”
The Stop Slavery Award was launched by the Thomson Reuters Foundation in 2015 to recognize best-in-class companies for limiting the risk of slavery in their supply chain and operations as well as the role they are playing as key agents in the global fight against slavery. Delta was honored alongside supermarket Aldi UK; HSBC, for its work to provide bank accounts to slavery survivors; and Outland Denim, jean maker employing survivors and vulnerable women in Cambodia.

The awards followed a thought-provoking panel on leveraging inclusive economies to tackle modern slavery with speakers like the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, Dr. Maria Grazia Giammarinaro, and the UK’s Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner, Dame Sara Thornton.
“Our hope is that by highlighting and rewarding these incredible efforts, we will encourage others to follow suit,” said Thomson Reuters Foundation CEO, Antonio Zappulla. “The fight against slavery is gathering pace. Now is the time to harness the momentum and drive forward future efforts to combat this global scourge.”
Delta’s award-winning drive to support survivors, end trafficking
Delta’s #GetOnBoard campaign tackles human trafficking from every angle. That includes developing strong partnerships, training employees, volunteering, engaging customers, lobbying for legislation and supporting human trafficking survivors as the guiding voices in our program.

In partnership with Wellspring Living, Delta created its apprenticeship program for survivors to make the journey from survivor to thriver in 2018. At Delta, trafficking survivors are not confined nor defined by their past as apprentices are offered career skills, mentorship and critical work experience to chart new opportunities. Most recently, an apprenticeship graduate shared her story at the White House Summit on Human Trafficking with Advisor to the President, Ivanka Trump.
Delta has committed $2.5 million to the anti-trafficking experts at Polaris, in support of the U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline. They have seen a 36 percent increase in contacts from victims since Delta’s original donation. Delta has also developed training for employees to identify and report human trafficking. So far, over 86,000 Delta people have been trained, and we aim for the remaining 4,000 to complete training by mid-year.
