Delta Air Lines, the official airline sponsor of the Copa America Centenario soccer tournament, is ready to begin its tour of the legendary Copa America trophy in Mexico City, Mexico, and Sao Paulo, Brazil, from May 15-20. The cup’s journey will be coordinated with alliance partner Aeroméxico and will include private events in both cities as well as photo opportunities for employees of Aeroméxico and GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes.
The Copa América is one of the most prestigious and most widely viewed sporting events in the world. In its 100 years of existence this is the first time it is being held outside of Latin America and Delta will charter the flights for the 16 teams during the U.S. matches.
“We will be sharing a moment in history with our most loyal customers in Mexico City and in Sao Paulo when we bring the cup for a series of signature events two weeks before the opening of the tournament,” said Nicolas Ferri, Delta’s Vice President – Latin America and the Caribbean. “The cup will also visit the offices of our colleagues from Aeroméxico and GOL, allowing employees to share in the excitement of the Copa America Centenario. Our business goals unite us and so does our common passion for soccer.”
The trophy departs on Aeroméxico’s flight 405 from John F. Kennedy International Airport on May 15 traveling to Mexico City where it will remain until the evening of May 17. The Cup will again be entrusted to Aeroméxico’s care and makes its way to Sao Paulo on AM014 arriving on the morning of May 18 at Guarulhos International Airport. The Copa America trophy will be received by GOL and Delta flight attendants for the start of its Brazilian tour including visits to top Delta customers and to GOL’s headquarters at the Congonhas Airport in Sao Paulo. The cup will return to the U.S. in time for the opening of the games.
The Copa America Centenario tournament begins on June 3 when the U.S. will play Colombia at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. The 16 teams will be flying to the games in 10 cities across the U.S. aboard Delta charters.
“Delta is ready to provide the teams with an exceptional first class experience,” said Bill Wernecke, Managing Director – Delta’s Charter Sales and Operations. “The fleet of 11 Boeing 757-200 aircraft was re-configured into a 72-seat VIP layout with tables, swivel chairs and electric power available to each seat.”
