Patrick Waddle, San Francisco-based Delta flight attendant, knew his liver was failing. Doctors told him that he would likely have to wait more than three years for a transplant in his home state of California.

He’s alive today because he had help finding the right care, at the right time, in the right place for his unique situation – in part thanks to Optum, one of Delta’s long-standing medical benefits partners.

For Patrick, this meant a transplant more than 2,000 miles away, in Indiana. The “Day Zero” video above recounts how his life was saved.

Patrick says the support he received from the Delta family has been very meaningful.

“Delta stood behind me all the way,” he said. “Every day, I feel grateful. I got a chance to live again.”
