Delta jumped eight spots on this year’s Fortune 500 list to number 73. The list ranks the 500 largest U.S. companies by revenue.
Last year, Delta posted nearly $41 billion in revenues, up 6 percent from the previous year. The magazine cited Delta’s strengths, including the profit-sharing and stock ownership programs that “give employees a stake in the company,” and that Delta owns and operates its own reservations system and data.
It also noted some “unusual bets” that Delta has taken under Richard Anderson, including the purchase of the refinery in Trainer, Penn., and the acquisition of a 49 percent stake in Virgin Atlantic.
American Airlines Group landed a few slots ahead of Delta at number 70, while United Airlines was at number 79 and Southwest Airlines at 161.
