John Hunter is Vice President of Fuel Supply and Trading for Delta Air Lines and President of Epsilon Trading LLC, Delta’s wholly owned jet trading subsidiary.
John is a highly accomplished senior executive with more than 25 years of success in the airline transportation and oil & gas industries. Throughout his career, John has built on a diverse background with a proven ability for critical thinking of complex information and the ability to create clear, effective strategic initiatives. His skills include commodities trading, risk management, supply chain management, logistics (marine, pipeline, rail and trucking), complex deal structures, team building, compliance, health and safety, human resources, auditing, reporting, financial analysis, accounting, scheduling, operational improvement, and procurement.
As Vice President of Fuel Supply and Trading, John oversees all commercial activity, logistics and government compliance for the wholly owned refining subsidiary Monroe Energy LLC. He has helped grow the refinery to a net profit position since inception and has fully integrated the Refinery into Delta’s wellhead to wingtip jet fuel strategy. He has built a team of over twenty experienced individuals that have improved crude cost by over $500M while improving the net sales value of clean products and other streams by over $100M. In parallel, he has overseen business development, process and organizational improvement, fuel systems, credit management, strategic planning, and budgeting. All this builds on his earlier role with Delta as Managing Director of Fuel. Here he improved the company's refinery feedstock supply, clean products off-take agreements, and marketing for both LPG and Resid fuels, which included a reduction in costs with a proactive management approach to self-supply jet fuel in key markets.
In addition to oversight of Monroe Energy’s commercial and optimization activities, he leads the efforts to grow and improve Delta’s jet fuel self-supply chain resulting in annual savings of $75 million dollars per year. The strategy has included to self-supply over 60 airports from zero when John arrived.
Prior to joining Delta, John was Director of Fuel, Trading and Risk Management for Murphy Oil USA. While earning over $25 million in EBITDA in 2012 alone, John improved transparency within the business, procured over 150,000 barrels of gasoline and diesel per day, improved risk management, and inventory strategies, and undertook all logistical movements for Colonial, Plantation, EPPCO, Explorer, and Magellan pipelines.
Before taking on these roles, he was Manager for Crude Oil Trading in the South and then held the same position in the North. Both roles were with Murphy Oil USA. These positions lead John to trade Canadian, domestic and foreign crude oil as well as other refinery feedstocks and hedging strategies.
John began his career with Murphy Oil in several accounting roles, before becoming an Internal Auditor, where he was a corporate liaison for KPMG, undertaking compliance and operational audits, and identifying $15M of erroneous costs on joint ventures. John built a solid reputation for analysis and for proposing improvements.
John Hunter graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a BS in Accounting and then went on to complete an MA in Professional Accounting at the same university. He is a Certified Public Accountant with the State of Arkansas and has undertaken certifications in Leading for Organizational Impact with the Center for Creative Leadership and High-Performance Leadership with the University of Chicago.
John and Shasta, his wife of over 25 years, have six children. John enjoys playing basketball, reading and spending time with family. John is an active volunteer for various charities including Habitat for Humanity, Midwest Foodbank and Samaritan’s Purse. He also is a sponsor of Folds of Honor, leading an annual charity golf tournament to raise funds for the organization.
