Delta was the first domestic airline to start recycling onboard items. Since then, Delta has used funds from these efforts for nine of the 247 homes its built with Habitat for Humanity.

That’s only one example of why Delta was celebrated Tuesday night in New York when President Glen Hauenstein accepted the 2017 Vision for America Award on behalf of Delta’s 80,000 employees from the Keep America Beautiful organization.

Delta is the first airline to receive the Vision for America Award. Past honorees include Honeywell, Dell and Caterpillar.

“Keep America Beautiful sees in Delta a shared belief that when individuals, corporations, governments and nonprofits work together, we can fulfill a vision of a country – and a world – in which every community can be environmentally healthy, socially supported and economically sound,” said Helen Lowman, president and CEO of Keep America Beautiful.

Delta was the first domestic airline to voluntarily purchase carbon offsets – more than $8 million worth to date – because it was the right thing to do. Delta also offers its customers the ability to purchase offsets to lessen their carbon footprint.

“I have always been proud to be part of the Delta family,” Hauenstein said in his acceptance speech. “As a values-driven company, we know we must be strong stewards of the environment and contributors to the communities where we live, work and serve. That’s why Delta people proudly support organizations big and small worldwide – our success would be meaningless without it.”

Hauenstein went on to share how giving back 1 percent of its net income is only part of Delta’s community engagement commitment.

“In 2016 alone, nearly 21,000 employees volunteered more than 520,000 hours to plant trees, build homes, donate books, build playgrounds, teach kids to read and swim, mentor youth and more,” he said. “This is noble work on top of the exceptional customer service Delta people offer each and every day. It’s fueled by their passion to make a difference worldwide – to have an impact.”
