NEW YORK - An electrical fire at Newark Liberty International Airport early Monday forced delays and cancellations throughout the day, but Delta expected to resume service by this evening.

The fire was contained to the ceiling of a boiler room in Terminal B, where Delta operates. It was contained, extinguished and caused no injuries, but the terminal was evacuated and had to be ventilated due to heavy smoke.

With the air quality in the terminal now safe, teams are cleaning up the gate area and building a temporary wall around the damaged space. Delta expects to resume flights later today, though gate availability is limited and commercial power is intermittent.

Delta has issued a waiver for Newark customers affected by the disruption.
