- In 2013, frequent flyers redeemed more than 271 billion miles in the SkyMiles program for 11 million Award redemptions. During this same period, 7 percent of revenue miles flown on Delta were for Award Travel.
- The SkyMiles program eliminated mileage expiration in February 2011 making it the only major frequent flyer program in which miles do not expire.
- In addition to Award Tickets, Delta offers additional ways to redeem frequent flyer miles – including mileage upgrades and Delta Sky Club memberships.
- The SkyMiles program began May 1, 1995, but a frequent flyer program has been offered by Delta since September 1981.
- The SkyMiles program has more than 92 million worldwide members, including nearly seven million members in Asia.
- Delta offers Medallion Complimentary Upgrades within and between the 48 contiguous states, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and Northern South America. Effective March 1, 2014 Medallion Complimentary Upgrades will also be available on flights between Hawaii and Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, or Seattle but will no longer be available on flights between New York-JFK and Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Seattle.
Membership Tiers
- Tiers include Diamond Medallion, Platinum Medallion, Gold Medallion, Silver Medallion, general membership and Million Miler.
- Members may purchase Delta Sky Club memberships to access more than 50 worldwide lounges. Diamond Medallion members receive complimentary Delta Sky Club membership access.
- SkyMiles is the only program to offer Rollover Medallion Qualification Miles, which allows any elite qualification mile earned above a Medallion threshold to automatically roll over to a members’ elite balance for the following year, making every qualification mile count for our Medallion members.

- Readers of Executive Traveler voted the SkyMiles program the best domestic frequent flyer program in 2012 and 2013
- The SkyMiles program was named “Best Frequent Flyer Program” four years in a row from 2009 to 2012 by Business Traveler magazine.
- Global Traveler magazine rated the SkyMiles program the Best Frequent-Flyer Customer Service, Americas and Best Frequent-Flyer Affinity Credit Card Promotions in 2013.
Earning Miles
- Members earn miles by flying Delta, Delta Shuttle, Delta Connection carriers, SkyTeam partners and other airline partners.
- SkyMiles members on Delta-marketed or Delta-ticketed travel will earn between five and 11 miles per dollar spent based on their SkyMiles status for flights flown on or after January 1, 2015.
- The program offers mileage-building opportunities through more than 100 worldwide SkyMiles partners, including the Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express (and other credit card offerings in 13 worldwide locations), Delta SkyMiles Check Card, participating hotels, car rental companies, restaurants, SkyMilesShopping.com and financial services.
- The Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express issued in the United States offers consumer and small business cards. Gold, Platinum, and Reserve Delta SkyMiles Credit Cardmembers may check their first bag for free, enjoy Priority Boarding and receive 20 percent off eligible in-flight purchases on every Delta flight.
- Members can earn MQMs through flight activities, Delta Platinum and Reserve Credit Card activity, and special MQM promotions with our preferred partners.
Using Miles
- Starting January 1, 2015 customers will enjoy improved Award seat availability at the lowest levels, One-Way Awards at half the price of round-trip, additional Miles + Cash options and significant improvements to delta.com Award shopping tools.
- The SkyMiles program eliminated mileage expiration in February 2011 making it the only major frequent flyer program in which miles do not expire.
- Members may use the online Award calendar to find the most accurate, up-to-date Award availability on Delta and select partner airlines and may combine Economy and First Class/BusinessElite travel into one Award Ticket.
- SkyMiles members can redeem miles for Award Travel on 28 partner airlines.
- In 2008, Delta launched a three-tiered Award structure that provides members with more flexibility and redemption options, as well as access to last-seat Award availability and the ability to combine cabins and dates at multiple mileage levels on all Delta-operated flights. Starting January 1, 2015, Delta will expand to a redemption structure with up to five levels that will offer even more Award Travel options.
- Customers may redeem miles for travel, upgrades and Delta Sky Club memberships. They also may transfer miles or donate them to various charities through Delta’s SkyWish program.
- Delta is an industry leader in redemption options and enables members to use miles for Award Travel, magazines and unique auction experiences.
- Members can bid miles through the SkyMiles Online Auction for a variety of merchandise, such as unique gifts, exclusive event opportunities and exciting resort packages. In 2013, members bid almost 40 million miles in the SkyMiles Online Auction across over 550 individual packages.
