Hurricane Irma drove no further cancellations Tuesday as the weakened storm spread rain and less severe winds across Alabama and Tennessee, allowing most Florida operations to resume and its Atlanta hub to work unimpeded.
Delta was honored today to be the first airline to resume service at Tampa, Orlando, Sarasota, Fort Lauderdale and, on Monday, West Palm Beach. The smooth restart was the result of precise coordination of Delta teams across airports, flight operations, in-flight service, maintenance, dispatch and others.
Delta will resume service to Fort Myers on Tuesday evening and expects a full schedule Wednesday. Daytona Beach service will resume Wednesday morning. Flying at Brunswick, Ga.; Key West, Fla.; St. Thomas; Virgin Islands; Turks and Caicos and St. Maarten will continue to be evaluated for the safe resumption of service when possible.

6 a.m. Tuesday update:
As degraded tropical depression Irma sloshes across Alabama and Tennessee Tuesday, Delta teams are poised to resume most scheduled flying to and from Florida and reset its Atlanta hub operation after Irma’s impact on Monday.
Approximately 140 flight cancels Tuesday are expected out of more than 5,500 scheduled and Delta does not expect that number to increase. With the exception of Irma, good operational weather across the continental U.S. is forecast for the next few days. Customers can easily check flight status, check-in for flights and more on the Fly Delta app and at delta.com.
Delta will be operating several extra flights Tuesday between Atlanta and the following destinations:
- Miami (with widebody Boeing 767-400 aircraft bringing 262 additional seats each way)
- Fort Lauderdale
- Tampa
- Orlando
Additional, an extra flight between New York-JFK and San Juan, Puerto Rico and Los Angeles and Miami will operate. Finally, Delta’s humanitarian flight from Providenciales, Turks and Caicos to Detroit will fly today.

Delta has combined and consolidated fee waivers through Sept. 20 for customers transiting three dozen destinations where flights will be affected by Irma, and created a new waiver for St. Thomas, St. Maarten and Turks and Caicos for customers ticketed through Oct. 31.

9 p.m. Monday update:
As Delta teams prepared to resume operations at airports across Florida, Irma's sustained winds of 30 mph and gusts of 60 mph at the airline’s Atlanta hub led to 1,100 network flight cancellations and more than 65 diverted flights Monday. With Atlanta airport conditions coming back to within operating limits Monday evening, the airline was gradually increasing operations into and out of Atlanta, including accepting many of the previously diverted flights.
Delta plans to start Tuesday with about 140 flight cancellations as a result of disruptions to operations throughout Florida and in Atlanta Monday.
As the storm traversed Georgia Monday, Delta teams set their sights on resuming service to Florida airports. Delta was in contact with airport authorities throughout the state on the condition of runways, taxiways and terminal infrastructure, some of which sustained damage. The latest updates on resuming operations across airports affected by Irma is below.

Meanwhile, at St. Thomas in the Caribbean on Monday, Delta operated a humanitarian flight to bring in recovery supplies and carry out 150 U.S. citizens to Detroit. Delta continues to examine when regularly scheduled service may resume. Additional humanitarian flights are expected throughout the week to destinations in the Caribbean.

3 p.m. Monday update:
Armed with the latest forecast and hurricane projections, Delta teams in the airline’s Operations and Customer Center have decided to cancel about 900 flights Monday as Hurricane Irma is expected to bring to the Atlanta hub strong crosswinds that exceed operating limits on select mainline and regional aircraft.
At issue is Irma’s anticipated general north-south wind direction relative to Atlanta’s east-west runway configuration. As is the case at all airports, Atlanta’s five runways are aligned with the prevailing wind, which generally blows from the east or west. Aircraft are best suited to take off and land into the wind for better performance. When the wind direction is perpendicular to the runway, it’s called a crosswind and can make landing challenging and potentially unsafe. A slight crosswind is allowable and can be safely managed, but a 40 mph or greater crosswind, as the storm is expected to bring in Atlanta, may exceed allowable limits.
Wind shear, lighting and other convective weather is also possible in the vicinity of Atlanta and may prompt additional flight cancellations.

Delta teams continue to monitor conditions in Florida Sunday night and are gathering information for possible resumption of service Monday at airports throughout the Sunshine State.

With operations ceased at nearly all Florida airports, Delta teams are monitoring conditions and fine-tuning forecasts to determine potential impact at Delta's Atlanta hub for Monday, as well as understand when flying will resume at airports affected by Hurricane Irma.
