Today, Delta celebrates Women’s Equality Day along with the rest of the country in honor of the long road to women’s suffrage over a century ago and the continued efforts toward equality.

Delta champions women across the industry in various ways, such as by supporting the Supplier Development Academy – a 12-18-month program that develops high potential diverse suppliers through mentorship and capacity-building initiatives. Supporting women-owned businesses creates generational wealth and drives equity in multiple ways.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, women-owned businesses comprise 36% of the country’s businesses and employee more than 8 million workers – which is about 7% of the private-sector workforce. This number is only growing. Between 2002 and 2012, the number of women-owned firms increased at a rate 2.5 times the national average.

According to the WBENC, investing in these businesses encourages women’s economic empowerment and gender equality in businesses. In addition, it is beneficial for the overall economy, supports a future where women have the same opportunities and growth potential as their male counterparts, and creates a marketplace that is more reflective of the population it serves.

The Supplier Development Academy, which is designed to grow and enhance the quality of diverse suppliers, has worked with multiple women-owned enterprises throughout the years, including:

  • PPICW, Incorporated – Works with companies to develop policies, programs and initiatives that support both a diverse employee and supplier base
  • Slade – Construction and program management firm
  • Pax Assist - Wheelchair Service Provider
  • The Green Garmento – Supports businesses to affordably obtain a green supply chain
  • A Haute Cookie – A luxury cookie boutique
