On Saturday, June 1, more than 150 Delta and local community volunteers came together to build Delta’s 39th KABOOM! playground and the second in the Salt Lake City (SLC) area. Delta partnered with the Utah Jazz and the Salt Lake City Department of Public Lands to build a playground in Taufer Park.
In what once was an underutilized park in the heart of downtown, this new play space offers a safe, accessible place for children to learn, grow and be physically active. Volunteers installed a playground, painted benches and picnic tables, created sidewalk games and did some light gardening.
Throughout the day, Salt Lake City’s government officials also attended the build, including U.S. Congressman Blake Moore (R-UT), who brought his son to participate in the day. Moore imparted encouraging words for Delta volunteers, thanking them for their service saying, “Thank you to KABOOM!, Delta, the Utah Jazz and the Salt Lake City Department of Public Lands for building an amazing new playground in SLC. My son and I were grateful to be part of this project dedicated to building safe places for children to play and encouraging them to get outside.”
Salt Lake City Councilmember Eva Lopez Chavez, District 4 (where Taufer Park is located) was also in attendance.
“It is the opportunity to rebuild Taufer Park’s playground that brings Salt Lake City, Delta, KABOOM! and the Utah Jazz together, helping redesign play space equity in our beloved community,” Chavez said. “Thanks to these partnerships, we can reimagine once blighted spaces as invigorating places of belonging in our growing city. Thank you to Delta for your continued investment in a city that is proud to host one of the largest Delta hubs.”
The playground was completed in just five hours and included a multi-dimensional play structure with two slides, a zipline and a swing set. At the ribbon cutting, the Salt Lake City Department of Public Lands and Taufer Park were presented with a check for $10,000 from Delta by Blake Green, Director of Airport Operations in Salt Lake City. The contribution will assist with long-term maintenance of the playground.
“Everywhere I go everyone says they’re so glad the Delta Center name is back, so it’s really important we continue giving back to the community, and the Utah Jazz has been a great partner with us,” Green said.
Delta is proud to support KABOOM! in its goal to end play space inequality by uniting with communities to build intentional play spaces that spark joy and foster a sense of belonging for children who are often denied opportunities to thrive. Since the start of our almost 11-year partnership, Delta volunteers have helped build 39 KABOOM! playgrounds across the country.
