Inside a connection at Detroit Metropolitan Airport
At Detroit, a connection isn’t just a stop — it’s part of the trip. See how smart design, local touches and seamless movement help travelers make the most of time between flights.
I arrived at Detroit Metropolitan Airport with two hours between flights — enough time to grab coffee, get some work done and see how easy the connection really was.
First priority: caffeine.
A hub built for movement
My arrival and departure were both within the McNamara Terminal, a long, light-filled concourse designed to streamline connections.
Tall windows stretch along the terminal, offering prime plane-spotting views. Moving walkways help speed things along, and the bright red ExpressTram cuts long walks into minutes, stopping near major gate clusters and Delta Sky Clubs.
Even with time to explore, I never felt far from my departure gate.
A taste of Detroit
One of my favorite ways to experience a city during a layover is through its food.
I found Zingerman’s Coffee inside Plum Market near Gate A36 and ordered a caramel latte that lived up to its reputation. Nearby were local options like 7greens for fresh salads and Leo’s Coney Island for classic comfort dishes.
Further down the concourse, the Eastern Market Experience showcased Detroit favorites, from Buddy’s deep-dish pizza to Michigan craft beer. Retail shops like Corktown Place featured locally made products — I left with a small bottle of Detroit-made hot sauce.
It felt like sampling the city without ever leaving the terminal.
Space to work or unwind
With time remaining, I stopped by the Delta Sky Club near Gate A43.
Modern seating, local artwork and runway views created a comfortable place to reset. I caught up on emails, considered a second coffee and ultimately opted for hot chocolate instead.
Just steps away sits The Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport, directly connected to the McNamara Terminal. For anyone with an overnight connection or early flight, it’s hard to beat — the hotel even has its own TSA checkpoint in the lobby, so you can head straight to your gate without ever leaving the airport footprint.
As boarding time approached, I realized how much I’d accomplished during just two hours.
I’d explored, worked, eaten well and never once felt rushed.
Whether connecting to another U.S. city or heading overseas, Detroit isn’t just a transfer point. It’s a hub designed to make the journey between flights feel efficient, comfortable and unexpectedly enjoyable.
