Service in action: How Delta honored Dr. King together

This week, more than 400 employee volunteers came together to execute community service activations in communities nationwide to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Activities ranged from meal packing to visiting families in children’s hospitals, to sharing the joys of reading with children to celebrate Dr. King’s achievements and contribute toward his vision of a Beloved Community.
Dr. King's "Beloved Community" philosophy is a concept rooted in the idea that it is possible to create "a society based on economic and social justice where all people can share in the wealth of this earth." As a tribute, Delta people put those words into action by participating in service events that would impact their neighbors and communities across the country.
On Jan. 15, the BOLD BRG hosted the D.E.A.R Martin reading events at local elementary schools across the Atlanta, Cincinatti, and Salt Lake City markets. In partnership with The King Center, nearly 200 volunteers filled third grade classrooms for an interactive read of “It Starts with Me” by Dr. Bernice King.
On Jan. 19, 150 Delta and Hands On Atlanta partnered to conduct a meal kit pack event at Hope Hill Elementary School. More than 150 volunteers assembled 2,000 meal kits that will provide children in Atlanta with rounds of lunches before winter break and spring break.
“Through acts of service, we embody Dr. King’s vision of a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and Delta’s mission to better connect and reflect the world. We believe that no child should experience hunger, starting with our hometown of Atlanta,” said Amal Yusuf, General Manager of Airport Customer Service at Delta Air Lines, and a board member for Hands on Atlanta.
The following community partners supported Delta in curating opportunities to serve:
Atlanta Public Schools, Clayton County Public Schools, Hands On Atlanta, KIPP D.C., KIPP Metro Atlanta, Second Harvest of Central Florida, The King Center, YMCA of SoFL
Dr. King's contributions to society continue to reverberate in the work we do every day to keep climbing. The change we hope to see tomorrow is what we work to accomplish today. For more about Delta’s work in global communities, visit Delta.com/Community.
