Among the many activities to explore in Japan, skiing and snowboarding are beloved winter pastimes. As the number of international travelers to Japan has grown, more visitors from countries such as the U.S., Australia and across Asia have been drawn to Japan’s snowy slopes.

Japan boasts approximately 450 ski resorts—ranking alongside the U.S. in terms of facility numbers. Despite its relatively compact size, over 50% of Japan’s landmass is designated as heavy snowfall areas, making it one of the snowiest countries on Earth. Thanks to this climate, Japan is uniquely gifted with exceptional snow quality, famously known as "powder snow."

WHERE TO SKI IN JAPAN

Among Japan's renowned ski destinations, Niseko, Furano and Rusutsu in Hokkaido, as well as Naeba in Niigata Prefecture and Hakuba in Nagano Prefecture, are popular destinations among travelers. Last year, the Niseko area in Kutchan welcomed approximately 230,000 foreign overnight guests according to Kutchan tourism reports. Similarly, Hakuba Valley in Nagano, comprised of 10 ski resorts, attracted roughly 570,000 international skiers and snowboarders during the 2023–2024 season, as reported by Hakuba Valley Tourism.

Exploring JAPOW: The World’s Finest Powder Snow

Hokkaido's Powder Snow Promotion Council proudly promotes its powder snow as "JAPOW"—a term derived from "Japan Powder." This globally recognized snow quality has been lauded as the finest on Earth, earning accolades from skiers and snowboarders worldwide.

What makes Hokkaido’s powder snow so extraordinary? The secret lies in its unique geographical and climatic conditions. Warm ocean currents in the Sea of Japan create moisture-laden air. When Siberian cold fronts sweep across the region, this air condenses, forming snow clouds that release their bounty over Hokkaido's mountainous terrain. The result: light, dry and perfectly powdered snow.

HOT AND COLD: Relax and unwind with blended elements

Adding to the appeal of Japan’s ski resorts are the numerous hot springs located nearby. After an exhilarating day on the slopes, soaking in a traditional “onsen” (hot spring in Japanese) offers the perfect way to relax and rejuvenate. Outdoor baths with views of snow-covered landscapes provide a serene, tranquil experience. The mineral-rich waters not only soothe tired muscles but also offer a range of health and skincare benefits.

WHEN TO HIT THE SLOPES

The ski season in Japan typically runs from December to March, with January and February being the peak months. Hokkaido, Nagano and Niigata are home to the highest volume of ski resorts, with Niseko and Hakuba frequently recognized among the world’s best by global awards and publications. Whether you’re a seasoned skier seeking thrilling backcountry slopes or a beginner looking for gentle runs, Japan has something for everyone.

Japan’s snow resorts are more than just ski destinations—they are gateways to unforgettable winter adventures. With breathtaking scenery, warm hospitality and a wealth of après-ski options - including delicious local cuisine and cultural experiences - Japan is sure to make your winter getaway truly special.
