As a young boy growing up in Puerto Rico, Cristian Hernandez, Delta Regional Sales Manager – San Juan, has fond memories of school field trips to the island’s capital.

“Seeing the transition from the greenery of the mountains to the vibrant colors of the city's architecture felt surreal. I used to lower the school bus window to enjoy the warmth on my face as we were greeted with the calming sound of waves and salty air - that meant we were approaching the so-called ‘walled city.’”

San Juan is a unique canvas of charm and self-expression, where 500 years of history meet modernity throughout its districts. From walking along the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan and admiring the macro murals in Santurce to shopping at high-end designer stores in Condado and tasting fine dining cuisine in Hato Rey, everywhere you look, you will discover the Boricua essence (a term used to refer to a native of Puerto Rico or a person of Puerto Rican descent).

“San Juan is a living testament to the island's spirit, where the music fills the air with infectious energy, and the people welcome you with open arms and warm hearts,” said Hernandez.

SPEND FALL AND WINTER IN PARADISE

“Regardless of the season, it's always paradise-like in Puerto Rico,” said Hernandez. The island boasts temperatures between the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit all year round, giving tropical vibes even in autumn and winter.

For those looking to spend their holidays in the sun, Puerto Rico is known for having the most extended holiday season in the world, so traveling during this time is your ticket to join the party. You can make the most of the island's unique celebrations, genuinely immersing yourself in rich Puerto Rican culture and indulging in its diverse gastronomy. The Christmas season kicks off the day after Thanksgiving and doesn't wrap up until the end of the iconic Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián, a longstanding festival on the third weekend of January.

This growth translates to a 30% increase in available seats compared to last year's winter season, with added frequencies to nine destinations in the region including Guatemala and Liberia, Costa Rica, in Central America, as well as San Juan, Puerto Rico.

In addition to the fiesta atmosphere, adventure-seekers can experience some of the most exceptional surf conditions in the Caribbean during winter.

YOU’VE LANDED, NOW WHAT?

The perfect blend of old-world charm and modernity, San Juan has no shortage of activities. Hernandez shared some of the most unique things to see and do when visiting the island:

Old San Juan magic and iconic fortresses

Be transported back in time by the awe-inspiring colonial architecture as you stroll the blue cobblestone streets of the walled city. There, you'll find century-old landmarks, craft cocktails, contemporary fine dining, fantastic shopping spots and even a great nightlife scene.

Don't miss the stunning panoramic coast views from the never-defeated Castillo San Felipe del Morro (or El Morro). This fortress stood for over five centuries, guarding the shores of San Juan. You can also visit the Fuerte San Cristóbal, or "land-twin", to learn more about the Spanish rule over Puerto Rico.

Sun-kissed Beaches

San Juan has crystal clear beaches, each offering a unique atmosphere. Minutes from the airport, Isla Verde Beach is perfect for watersports and sunbathing, while El Escambrón combines natural beauty with city accessibility. Condado Beach has a lively atmosphere, with many beachfront bars and restaurants to enjoy.

Santurce’s Art Scene

A top recommendation from Hernandez is a visit to the colorful neighborhood of Santurce. “This district is a hub for arts and culture, and its streets have become an outdoor gallery with buildings adorned by vibrant macro murals,” he said. Additionally, there are dozens of stores, bars and restaurants to hop in and out of in the neighborhood.

Santurce is also home to La Placita, one of the hottest spots for bar hopping, as the area transforms from a day market to an outdoor nightclub after the sun falls.

Take a piece of San Juan home with you

In Old San Juan, the Paseo de la Princesa is a treasure trove of local craftsmanship. Wander this historical promenade and encounter diverse artisans showcasing their talents - from leatherwork and detailed wood carvings to jewelry and much more. And just like in Paseo de la Princesa, multiple vendors are scattered across San Juan, where you can get things like local hot sauce, artwork and clothes.

After soaking up the sun and getting your steps in, you are likely to have worked up quite the appetite. You can find genuine Puerto Rican cuisine practically everywhere, from street fritters to authentic Puerto Rican dishes and international fusion restaurants. There is no shortage of excellent cuisine throughout San Juan.

EXPLORING BEYOND SAN JUAN

When it comes to uncovering hidden gems in Puerto Rico, the possibilities are as diverse as the island itself. Travelers who venture outside San Juan are met with authentic dishes from each region:

  • Take the panoramic route to the south of the island and find the so-called "pork highway" in Guavate, where succulent pit-roasted pork is king.

  • Travel to the central mountains to visit Casa Bavaria, an authentic German-style biergarten, or Calichi Gastrobar.

  • Towards the north, places like Vaca Negra offer a unique countryside experience where you can taste and make different cheeses.

  • For a taste of the sea, explore the fresh seafood offerings from the coastal towns in the east and west regions.

While road-tripping around the island, you'll find that Puerto Rico is a haven for nature enthusiasts. It is home to three stunning bioluminescent bays where you can kayak through the mystical glow-in-the-dark water. You can also find El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S., and the Guánica Dry Forest, a reserve on the opposite side with desert-like hikes that lead to a stunning beach.
