Connecting while connecting: A layover love story, Delta Sky Club style

In February 2022, two strangers checked into the Salt Lake City Delta Sky Club. What happened next? The ultimate Delta meet cute.

When Paige Hanlon checked into the Salt Lake City Delta Sky Club in Feb. 2022, romance was the last thing on her mind.

There on a layover after 21 hours of travel—messy hair, no make-up—she wasn’t exactly looking to make a love connection. In fact, she wasn’t looking, period—she’d recently decided to take a break from dating altogether and was savoring her single life.

Nevertheless, while waiting for drinks at the lounge bar, she overheard a conversation that she couldn’t resist joining.

Chatting with friends, Ian Sprosty was contemplating a move from Boston to New York City. Paige, a Boston native who had also made the move to New York, spoke up and made a connection, offering to share her experience.

Ian asked Paige if she was in the Club by herself; she was. He invited her to join his group of friends for drinks; she did. Eventually the friends departed for their flight, leaving just the two of them.

The rest, as they say, is history.

As they chatted, the connections continued: Ian and Paige discovered they were both avid snowboarders. Both loved music, sharing an affinity for classic rock. And naturally, both had a deep love for travel.

Despite the instant chemistry, their love story wouldn’t take flight for a few more months. Ian still lived in Boston, Paige in New York City – and also, as she made clear to Ian, she wasn’t interested in dating.

Even so, Ian contacted her as soon as he made his move to NYC. After a few platonic “non-dates,” they decided to make things official.

Nearly two years after that first meeting, travel continues to play a central role in Paige and Ian’s story. Their love of snowboarding took them to Whistler, British Columbia, where they hit the slopes. A trip to Italy is on the books for the summer. They list Japan as a dream destination.

“Dating someone who is also curious [about the world]—it makes it easier, when you’re prone to wanderlust,” said Paige.

Their travel compatibility goes beyond a shared curiosity. Despite said wanderlust, Paige, a self-professed “bad flier,” is easily spooked by turbulence on planes – to calm her pre-flight nerves, Ian sends her reports and updates from a turbulence tracking website for her route. For her part, Paige has influenced Ian to be less last-minute with his day-of travel itinerary, making sure everything is packed and ready to go in advance and they arrive at the airport with plenty of time to relax in the Delta Sky Club before their flight.

When asked to name a favorite Delta Sky Club, Paige listed the new JFK T4-A Club and the AUS Club.

Ian’s favorite?

“I’m biased toward Salt Lake City,” he said.
